Copilot-Readiness Audit for PowerPoint

When Copilot generates slides, it doesn’t see your deck the way a designer does.

It reads the structure underneath and most templates were never built for that. The result: slides that come out almost on-brand, but not quite.

The problem

If you've used Copilot in PowerPoint, you've probably seen this

The fonts aren't quite right. Brand colours are close, but off. Layouts ignore the template you paid good money for. It's easy to assume that's just Copilot being imperfect. But it isn't a Copilot problem. It's a template problem.

Copilot builds slides from the structure beneath your deck: the slide master, the named layouts, the theme colour slots, and the actual placeholders. If those were set up the traditional way (for people, not AI), Copilot can't read your brand properly, so it improvises. And improvised branding is off-brand branding.

What trips Copilot up

Most templates aren't Copilot-ready,
no matter who built them

It's not that templates are built badly. It's that "looks right to a human" and "readable by AI" are two different standards.

Problem #1
Example slides that aren't real layouts

Loose example slides look fine, but Copilot generates from layouts defined in the slide master. If they're not there, it can't use them.

Problem #2
Text boxes posing as placeholders

They look like placeholders, but Copilot can't treat them as such. Only true placeholders inserted via the master are recognised.

Problem #3
Hard-coded brand colours

When colours are pasted as fixed hex values instead of mapped to the theme's colour slots, they don't flow through to generated slides.

Problem #4
No organisational asset library

Without a properly configured asset library in SharePoint, Copilot has nowhere to pull approved brand assets and guidelines from.

Why the audit matters

Getting it right spans more than the file itself

Making a template genuinely Copilot-ready runs across three connected layers. Get one wrong and the output still drifts, even if the other two are perfect.

It’s become a genuine specialism and it’s one we’ve gone deep on. The audit tells you exactly where your template stands, what’s holding it back, and what it would take to fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Copilot-readiness audit?
It’s a review of the underlying structure that Microsoft Copilot uses when generating PowerPoint slides. We assess your template, theme configuration and asset setup to identify anything that could cause off-brand or inconsistent slide generation.
Why do I need an audit if my template already looks good?
Because Copilot doesn’t judge a template the way people do. A presentation can look perfectly on-brand to a human while still containing structural issues that prevent Copilot from generating consistent results. The audit identifies those hidden issues.
Isn’t this just a Copilot problem?
Usually not. Copilot works from the information available in your template, theme settings and asset libraries. When those foundations aren’t configured correctly, Copilot has to make assumptions, which often leads to off-brand output.
What causes Copilot to generate off-brand slides?
Common causes include:
  • Missing or poorly structured slide layouts
  • Text boxes used instead of true placeholders
  • Brand colours not mapped to theme colour slots
  • Inconsistent slide master structure
  • Missing or incomplete SharePoint asset libraries
We already have a professionally designed template. Is that enough?
Not necessarily. Many professionally designed templates were built before AI-generated content became a requirement. A template can be beautifully designed and still not be optimised for how Copilot interprets PowerPoint files.
Does Copilot use my example slides?
Not in the way most people assume. Copilot primarily works from the slide master, layouts, placeholders, theme settings and available brand assets. If important layouts only exist as example slides, Copilot may not be able to use them.
What does the audit cover?
We assess three key areas:
  • Template structure — Slide masters, layouts, placeholders and hierarchy.
  • Theme configuration — Colours, fonts and branding settings that Copilot relies on.
  • Asset management — The SharePoint libraries and brand assets Copilot uses when generating content.
How long does the audit take?
Most audits can be completed within a few days, depending on the complexity of your template and environment.
Will I receive recommendations?
Yes. You’ll receive a clear assessment of your current setup, the issues we identify and practical recommendations for improving Copilot output.
Is the audit really free?
Yes. There is no cost, no obligation and no commitment required. The goal is simply to help you understand how prepared your PowerPoint environment is for Copilot.
Can you help us fix the issues you find?
Absolutely. If you’d like support after the audit, we can help redesign, rebuild or optimise your PowerPoint templates, theme configuration and asset libraries to improve Copilot performance and brand consistency.
